His first job was delivering newspapers and then working at Weingarten grocery store while attending Reagan High School. He graduated with a degree in accounting from the University of Houston and became a CPA while working full-time at the United States Post Office. After working as an accounting manager in Illinois, Connecticut, and Iran, he returned to Houston to become an entrepreneur and successful local business owner. In retirement, he and his wife spent their time traveling and enjoying their family and grandchildren.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Geraldine; his older sisters, Betty Krenek and Una Webb; and his older brother Billy. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Julia Nell; his brothers, James and Hubert; his son, Paul; his daughter, Angela; his daughter, Julie, and her husband, Jonathan Smaistrla; and his grandchildren: Benjamin, Calvin and Abigail.

John was a loving husband and a good, caring friend, full of integrity and respect of others. His family and friends will miss his big hugs, his astute advice, and his fun, quick wit.
